Young Pistolero

By Robert J. Alvarado

Publisher: Sierra Press

This is a great fiction story that incorporates both history and a great story plot of a young man whose life spirals after avenging the rape of his younger sister. It has all the muster of a good western including gun fights, murder, and survival. The author does a fantastic job of incorporating the history of the United States and Mexico during a time when the Wild West was in full swing and struggles occurred on both sides of the border. The descriptions of history add much to the story and make the life of Rafael, the protagonist, really interesting.

Mr. Alvarado weaves a plausible plot and his setting descriptions and actions are right on. His graphic scenarios of land and territories make you feel as if you are right there alongside the rider as he heads through some rough terrain. His characters were exactly what you might expect of people living in the ‘rough’ west trying to survive the elements and mayhem of that time.

Both the villains and the heroes are given great angles and timing within the story. In addition, the writer incorporates Spanish words, which allows the reader to identify with the characters; however, he brilliantly illustrates the meaning after each and every word so non-Spanish speaking readers don’t miss a beat.

The book is filled with so much action that you can’t put the book down. The author manages to bring the reader into the story with action built into every chapter that you can’t escape feeling anxious wondering as to what will happen next.

Did the author achieve his goal of weaving a great story? I would say most definitely! I would say that for a 312 page book, it packed a big punch. The writing and scenes are structured to move the story forward with such accuracy that the story just glides into place.

If you enjoy westerns, then this book is a must. It has all the earmarks of a great western series. If you are looking for a good book to read, then this is one to put on your list this year. An excellent read!
