This children’s book takes a very interesting approach in that it shows a mother and son sharing a conversation about her military aviation career. In other books you normally see the pairing of a mother and daughter or a father and son, but this is different. This is one of several reasons why this book is special.
The story is unusual because not only does it show the mother in a successful aviation career (a mainly male dominated field), but for the reason that it opens up career possibilities for both girls and boys. It sends the message that all dreams are possible. It’s a subtle message, but a very important one. This book is a plus in that it illustrates a women can be successful in any working environment.
From an educational standpoint, it describes the type of aviation military patches that an aviator would proudly wear. Here the book provides information for all age levels – yes even adults.
In addition, the story shows the mother going off to work at night while the father remains at home keeping the family safe. This is exceptionally informative in that it captures the many families of today as more and more women are joining the work force and military. It shows that we have since moved from the “Beaver Cleaver” life style of yesteryear, and have now shifted into other family unit possibilities that really didn’t exist a few decades ago.
With the book being bilingual, it is that much more valuable. It is a book that should be in various teaching environments for the many elements it captures and the positive messages it sends to young audiences, boys and girls alike. What a wonderful message all the way around. This is a book that should be on every child’s nightstand.
Thank you Graciela for a job well done! Can’t wait to see the upcoming books!
