Escaping Culture – Finding Your Place in the World

By Frederico Wilson

Publisher:TheBookPatch – Wilshire Press

It’s rare that you pick up a book, which makes you take a look at yourself and how you view the world. This book provides a view through a different lens. The author, coming from a multicultural mix (Mexican, Indian (Yaqui) and Euro-Iberian and Cornish ancestry provides the reader with an insight into the world that is unusual; therefore, creating thought provoking ideas and different possibilities.

What is appealing is that the author discusses culture and self awareness through snippets of his life and family. Throughout each chapter he provides interesting anecdotes and then gives the reader insight into his thought process and surroundings. He doesn’t take a stereotyped path view of his life just simply because of his culture – or then again, maybe he does. That will be for the reader to decide.

He discusses his “Pocho” connection to the world, but yet he doesn’t allow himself to be manipulated with this inference to his mixed culture. He considers himself a work in progress. The author discusses the view of women and men, their respective roles, and how they are viewed within the sexes. Mr. Wilson provides a different perspective that will make you think outside of the box whether you are female or male. His view on religion is not traditional, yet it is very enlightening.

In his book the author talks about family members that have died through different circumstances and how these deaths have molded his view on the world if you will. It’s quite informative.

What is best said about this book is that it tackles topics that most people won’t talk about, or if they do it’s only on a superficial level. Mr. Wilson’s perspective on everything is far from being shallow because he takes the topics to a different threshold. All this makes you question your role in life and how we may systematically fall into an ingrained way of thinking.

A very ‘hot’ topic discussed within the book is how Latinos interact with each other and how they possibly create their own demise. This is definitely a HOT topic and a must read section.

His writing style is easy to follow and he uses short stories of family, his friendships, his own interactions, and even poetry to bring his free-thinking perspective to life. Overall, I found the book a delight to read. I may not agree with everything that Mr. Wilson has written or the author’s thought process and life evaluations, but the book was very entertaining.

I would recommend this book to those that are not afraid to question their insight of how they view the world, and to those that are looking for a book that is quite different from the normal realm. I am pleased to include it on my bookshelf.
