Literature of Honduras

Honduras is located in Central America and it is a vibrant country with a rich and varied history. Since the time of the Mayans, the traditions of Honduras have been passed down to future generations through both art and the written word.

Honduras mapMany great artists have come from Honduras. Artists like Carlos Garay and Francisco Pinto Rodezno have helped to capture the life and times of the unique people who live in Honduras. In addition, there have been many writers whose works have helped to exemplify all that Honduras has to offer. Some of the best known writers from Honduras are Froylán Turcios, Lucila Gamero de la Medina and Ramon Amaya Amador. Though their works are very different, each of them has helped capture a little bit of the spirit of what makes Honduras so unique.

Froylan Turcois is an author who writes fiction such as the novel Páginas del Ayer. Froylan Turcois was also a respected politician and journalist. His strong political beliefs, which colored his written work, had a profound influence on the politics of Honduras throughout his lifetime.

Lucila Gamero de la Medina, another well known author from this region was one of the first woman authors to be widely published and read in Honduras. She was most well known for her romance novels. The main focus of her romance novels was love and family – a focus that is very important in the culture of Honduras to this day. One of her best loved books is Blanca Olmedo.

Perhaps the best known of all authors from Honduras is Ramon Amaya Amador. Ramon Amaya Amador was also a journalist and an avowed communist. His beliefs and his outspoken manner meant that his works and voice had a great deal of significance in the politics of Honduras. His works are still read to this day and some were even published after his untimely death at the age of 50. One thing that all of these authors share, despite the varied subject matter of their writings, is their uncanny ability to capture what was going on socially and politically in Honduras during their lifetime which is great for us. In this way, we get a front-view seat into the lives and times of Honduran society through a literary perspective.

There is no easy road to becoming a published author in the country of Honduras. There are very few publishing companies in Honduras and most publish only the most well known and established authors. That being said, over the last few years more non-traditional publishing opportunities have come about in Honduras. With the help of things like online publishers, which represent authors from a variety of different countries it is slightly easier for new authors to get discovered in Honduras than it was in earlier years. This goes without saying, for the rest of the world as well.

Honduras is a beautiful country filled with a variety of sights and locales that appeal to all that visit and live there. The rich history of the country and the varied background of its people provide much inspiration for artists and authors, both from the area and from abroad.
