By Pilar Marrero
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillian
Ms. Marrero has done an impressive job of capturing the immigration issues that impact our country today. She covers the immigration political polices put in place over the last 25 years, the current status of how states are addressing this problem, the impacts on people’s lives for both the immigrant and the U.S. citizen, and she provides a thought process to getting a plan in place that works for the betterment of all. It is obvious that Ms. Marrero has done her due diligence in researching her material – a testament to her fantastic journalist skills and keeping a balance of the issues at hand.
What makes this book great is that it covers the immigration issue from various perspectives. Ms. Marrero covers immigration policies and thought processes established over the years from the Republican and Democrat parties without conveying criticism, but rather stating the facts. Both parties are equal in not coming up with a solution to this immigration problem that has plagued our country for centuries. It is a book that covers the story with facts and data, but is written with such straightforwardness and style that you almost feel as if you are reading a story. I can promise you that it’s a book you won’t be able to put down. This is a demonstration to her great writing ability.
It is clear that the author has written this book to channel a thought process to address the complex immigration issues that are before us. I believe that she has successfully done this. The book is written from a Journalistic point of view, which is a good balance for disseminating this information out to the masses. Ms. Marrero is able to take a very complicated problem and organize and logically lay out the many immigration issues at hand for better understanding. She takes all the academic jargon out and makes it so easy to grasp. Her intended audience is clearly everyone; politicians, immigrants, U.S. citizens, students, everyone who has an opinion on this subject.
This book is definitely on my list for this year’s best books, and once you read it I know you will agree. It is a book that informs you, makes you wonder why a solution hasn’t been reached by politicians thus far, and will get your own internal dialogue going. Did this book achieve its goal? I would say that it went above and beyond this.
This is a book that should be on every politician’s desk and a must for every citizen because it begins an internal thought process for a solution to this complicated immigration problem that is at the forefront of our nation. It should be part of the curriculum at every University and college across the United States as we need to get the “next” generation in gear so that history doesn’t repeat itself.
