It has been said that Colombia is a land of poets. This comes as no surprise as this country has a strong and diverse history regarding literature and people. Therefore it makes sense that this country would have some of the finest poets emerge.

The Beginning of Published Poems

Various movements appear to be a large part of this culture, and poetry is a tool that has been used by many to capture this transformation throughout the ages. Many movements have taken place within the country, and one such movement is modernism. It appears to have emerged through the art world. This modernistic movement produced some of the greatest poetry due to it being an inspirational period for many. Those poets that emerged in earlier centuries have also been a great inspiration to those that followed in the lateral centuries.

Expressions of the Culture

Poetry can be viewed as an expression of culture and the poets coming from this region have done it wonderfully. Colombia is known for the following:

  • religious devotion
  • love themes
  • chronicles
  • various views regarding government
  • colorful illustrations of the lives of peasants

Colombia, like many other countries from this area, has seen many changes of government and people. It has produced beautiful expressions of culture that have only continued to blossom with time. Of course there has been the not so beautiful (as in every culture), and this has also been captured through various literature works in place, including poetry.
