By Victor Villaseñor
Publisher: Dell Publishing (A Delta Book)
After reading this book, I must say that it left me mesmerized. It is probably one of the best books ever written and I believe Mr. Villaseñor will go down in history as one of the greatest writers of all time. It is a true masterpiece!
I trust that the author’s goal was to capture his family’s history and pass it down to all the generations thereafter. I am sure that the author wrote on this particular topic because it was close to his heart and because it truly tapped into his knowledge base. He did this perfectly. The author writes about his ancestors, the Mexican Revolution, the hardships endured, the unfairness of being Mexican Americans in a White American world, the hunger, and the prejudices experienced and just so much more. He captures the female characters perfectly. You almost feel as if it’s a female author writing from a female insight.
The story is written in a third person point of view and captures the essence of this story with brilliance. The story is told with such passion that you can’t help but be drawn in. There is nothing that is technical, other than the great writing skill that is used throughout. He has just the right amount of information, dialog, suspense, and action to make the story come alive. I couldn’t imagine it being done otherwise.
His intended audience has to be everyone because it touches on all human elements and comes directly from the heart. This type of writing can’t be anything but successful. His approach to writing is not only passionate, but the way he describes places and people is amazing. You are not only immediately drawn to the characters, but you feel as if you are one of the characters in the book. Ah, such skill and art is found only amongst those great few! He is definitely in this category.
How did the book affect me? It is hard to say because it tapped into so many emotions and thoughts that it is difficult to sum it up into one paragraph. I can say, however, that I will read every book that this author writes. Hopefully there will be many more in the near future.
