David R. Martin was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 3, 1961 and, months later, his father from Yauco and his mother from Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, baptized him in San Juan. His first language was Spanish, but he would learn English as a toddler when he moved to Texas.
Mr. Martin returned to Puerto Rico during his adolescence and went to school on a U.S. military base in San Juan. He completed high school at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. He studied literature, history and economics at Amherst College, where he won a writing prize. Mr. Martin later obtained law degrees from the University of Puerto Rico and New York University. Mr. Martin has published numerous articles concerning business law and politics. When not writing, Mr. Martin practices corporate law with his own law firm, D.R. Martin, LLC, in Atlanta, Georgia.
